Our research project will help identify cultural barriers and opportunities to decrease the suffering of these animals in China. In partnership and consultation with local animal advocacy groups, we’ll identify the barriers and supports for specific advocacy methods before testing them experimentally. Effective research—just like effective advocacy—will require a sensitive understanding https://www.bookstime.com/ of the unique cultural associations and traditions around meat, dairy, and egg consumption. Vegan business leaders can use our findings to learn how to best position products in new markets with alternative consumer attitudes, beliefs, concerns, and preferences. Faunalytics is thrilled to share that our 2024 Original Research plans will support many different advocacy types and tactics.

  • After studying psychology and human rights at the University of Chicago and the Center for Decision Research, Björn worked in education and science writing.
  • Below is a selection of summaries worth checking out from the last couple of months.
  • On the library side, the majority of the write-ups are written by volunteers right now.
  • Our entire team is honored by this recognition, but more importantly, we’re so glad to see that more and more advocates are turning to research and data to inform their campaigns and strategies.
  • No matter what animal issue you’re passionate about, we’ve got the data and we’ve got you covered.
  • I finished grad school, and over the next several years I moved from events to programs management to the executive director role.

Are there any specific skills or areas of expertise that you find particularly valuable in your role?

The work carried out here is highly rele, vant to vegan brands, for example their labeling study What To Call Plant-Based Alternatives is highly pertinent to those marketing new plantbased products. Faunalytics is also currently researching methods for meat reduction in China, a subject at the top of the agenda for countless figures in the plantbased business world at present. These days I’m generally able to keep graphic imagery of animal suffering out of my every day work, but I see the data (e.g. Faunalytics’ Global Slaughter Statistics resources), and that knowledge is always there. I no longer feel the need to “bear witness” because I know that suffering exists, and likely will until the day I die.

Faunalytics’ original studies provide actionable and insightful data to improve animal advocacy. This year, led by our experienced researcher director Jo, we produced seven major research projects. Faunalytics’ Original Research and Research Library are vital programs, but the Research Support branch of our work is just as important. Through resources like our Office Hours, Research Advice hub, ambassador presentations, and annual symposium, we’re able to help advocates understand how use research in an active way.

  • There are too many other ones to go into, but we have studied clean meat messaging, best practices in labeling plant-based meat, and people who donate to animal causes.
  • We launched the first-of-its-kind study to understand how our movement leverages technology.
  • Andrea Polanco is a trained animal welfare scientist with a PhD from the University of Guelph, but is now happily conducting social science research at Faunalytics.
  • Does Faunalytics have other insights about the plant-based market that we should know?
  • Learn how we choose our study topics (and how you can participate in the process) here.

Faunalytics has several studies in progress that will support the efforts of vegan business owners and advocates alike. For example, our upcoming survey on trends in veganism will help us get to the bottom of how our primary audience is growing. This study is important because we need to measure our audience repeatedly, precisely, accurately, and comparably if we want to understand how the plant-based brooke haggerty industry is changing and rising in popularity. You’re turning your attention to meat reduction in China…what do you hope to learn? A staggering 89.1 billion land animals were slaughtered worldwide in 2017 according to data from the U.N. China slaughtered the largest number of land animals (more than 14.2 billion), with the United States coming in second (more than 9.4 billion).

  • This is part of an ongoing effort to ensure the topics we cover reflect the perspectives and priorities of all advocates.
  • Making that career switch was one of the best decisions I made, because it not only allowed me to support Prop 12, but it eventually led me to Faunalytics, where I started the day after election day.
  • In addition to producing numerous short films on various animal issues, karol is the director of Maximum Tolerated Dose, a feature-length documentary about the psychological toll of vivisection on both animals and humans.
  • I think that that will have a lot of impact for people as a follow-up to our previous research on current and former vegans or vegetarians.
  • And I know just seeing my fellow advocates in the movement achieve wins for animals gives me so much hope, and importantly, reminds me that we’re not in this alone.

In 2007 our Research Library came to life, and since then we’ve added over 5,300 study summaries and resources to this treasure trove of data, covering nearly every animal advocacy topic imaginable. In 2024 we plan to hire a Content Manager to help us bring our Library to even greater heights. We’ve let this unique blend of values shape our work, and we’re excited to share what we’ve been up to so far this year. We invite you to explore our latest studies and projects, made possible thanks to our generous supporters, skilled volunteers, and dedicated team members.
