animals & social justice

We prioritized automating the process of connecting organizations with technical, design, and other support needs with skilled volunteers. Spreading AwarenessWe were featured on the Charity Talks podcast, which highlights the important work of nonprofits and the inspirational people making an impact for others. We were also interviewed by A Happier World, an online video series that explores exciting ideas with the potential to radically improve the world. But to your question, I think something that has helped us in this regard is 1) having people in the right roles for them so that they’re set up for success, and 2) giving folks the autonomy to do their jobs. Although we all learn quite a bit as we go, I think our team members are each very well suited for their roles. This makes my job as a manager much easier; for the most part, I just try to stay out of their way (which in turn allows me to focus on my work).

  • Indeed, animal advocacy has the potential to be so much more effective when we include more voices at the table and consider how our efforts connect with other social justice movements.
  • In 2018, she was involved with the “Yes on Proposition 12″ coalition promoting a California ballot initiative that established minimum space requirements for farmed animals.
  • Major corporations and small nonprofits alike made commitments to take diversity, equity, and inclusion seriously, including animal protection organizations.
  • Now, whether it’s through our research, or via honest, raw conversations uplifting other leaders, I feel so grateful to be in this unique position in the movement.

Faunalytics’ Plans & Priorities For 2024

Another main program area is our research library, which continues to be one of our biggest accomplishments. It has now just over 4,000 studies in the library, we continue to add about 200 new library summaries per year. And we also do an additional 50 or so blogs, which usually touch on one or more research studies as well. That continues to be one of our most highly visible programs in terms of reach and breadth; we reach about 23,000 unique visitors per month.

Thank You For Your Support

  • I personally am trying to support and amplify organizations led by womxn and BIPGM (Black, Indigenous, People of the Global Majority) advocates.
  • Faunalytics’ Original Research program is spearheaded by our Research Director, Dr. Jo Anderson.
  • In terms of areas of expertise, I’ve often felt like leaders (at least those of us who don’t run the really big orgs) are the ultimate generalists.
  • Faunalytics Turns 22Founded in 2000, we’ve been bringing research to the animal protection movement for 22 years!
  • We’ve let this unique blend of values shape our work, and we’re excited to share what we’ve been up to so far this year.

In addition to our public-facing programs outlined above, Faunalytics had a lot of exciting changes happening behind the curtains this year. As the need for research grows and more advocates turn to data to inform their work, we’ve needed to grow as well! Jenna Riedi is a devoted life-long animal advocate and is passionate about protecting and advancing the lives of animals around brooke haggerty the world. She has worked and volunteered for nonprofit organizations for over 20 years, with a focus on marketing and fundraising. Jenna spends her downtime with her trio of companion animals (Navi, Mielikki, and Starbuck), and also enjoys reading, singing, and hiking. Karol orzechowski is a longtime animal advocate with a passion for advocacy, art, statistics, and tech.

  • Through resources like our Office Hours, Research Advice hub, ambassador presentations, and annual symposium, we’re able to help advocates understand how use research in an active way.
  • I was looking for a job while in school, and applied to work at a thrift store that benefited an animal charity; however, they ended up hiring me to work on one of their campaigns!
  • They know how to persuade people to buy things and they know how to sway public opinion to their advantage.
  • Our findings suggest that restaurants that aren’t exclusively vegan should consider using more veg defaults on their menus to increase veg purchases (and possibly profit margins).
  • Overall, as an organization, we think about 90–92% of our resources go toward what would be considered effectiveness-related topics.

Outside of work, they enjoy crafting, hiking, cuddling with their two cats, Luna and Lillian, and sipping iced lattes. Thousands of Study SummariesWe’ve added over 100 new study summaries to our Research Library so far this year, saving animal advocates valuable time by providing key takeaways from the external research and data that we curate. And thanks to feedback from our community, we’ve now started “bolding” the top findings in each summary to help advocates save even more time. No matter what animal issue you’re passionate about, we’ve got the data and we’ve got you covered. Below is a selection of summaries worth checking out from the last couple of months.

Could you speak more about the board self-assessment and if you have a formal self-assessment at Faunalytics?

That is something that we are thinking more about, particularly when it comes to recruiting volunteers, staff or advisors. I think we do a pretty good job overall, but certainly have some areas for improvement too. In terms of more specific accomplishments within that umbrella of the research program, I am very proud of our numbers. Plus another year of the animal tracker, our longitudinal study, and also eight original analyses of existing data sets with our own and others. In terms of the studies (there are too many, obviously, to go into the details), I’ll discuss a couple of our highest impact ones. Research suggests that highly data-driven organizations are three times more likely to report significant improvements in decision-making.

  • Faunalytics’ Fundamentals are a collection of topic overviews and resources that provide the latest and best data for a variety of important animal issues.
  • In 2024, we plan to hire a Projects Manager to help our team continue to be as efficient as possible as we bring more and more research to the animal protection community.
  • As I became involved with different organizations and causes over the years, I had the privilege of being a part of the many aspects of nonprofit work that you mentioned above.
  • I always knew I wanted to be doing everything I possibly could for animals in my career, but prior to Faunalytics hadn’t thought as much about how to support other people who share this passion.
  • So I gained experience with a lot of grassroots work, leafleting, protesting, political outreach, and humane education, as well as the new experiences of representing our cause to the public, police, and media.
  • This year our team provided personalized, one-on-one support to over five dozen advocates and organizations directly through our office hours.
